NSW: Australian-first policy launch on Aboriginal languages=2

More than $250,000 will be allocated each year for four years to fund the centre andthree staff, as well as an internet database linking information on Aboriginal languagesacross the state.

The money will also provide seed funding for Aboriginal communities to rediscover andrebuild their languages.

Two communities who have already begun working to effectively develop dictionariesof their language are the Gumbainggir, from the NSW mid north coast, and the Kamilaroi, from Walgett, people.

Schoolgirls Ashleigh Walker, 13, Michaela Fitzgerald, 14, and Alkira Fitzgerald, 13,sang songs in their traditional Gumbainggir tongue at the launch of the policy today.

The girls, from St Vincents College in Potts Point, said it was important Aboriginalpeople knew their traditional language.

"They need to know where they belong and their own language, because if they don'tknow that then they're just lost," Ashleigh said.

Michaela said she really liked the Gumbainggir language.

"No offence, but I reckon we've got the best language," she said.

"I just feel that we should know our own language so we know where we come from andthen we can pass it on to our children."
